iPhone 17 Pro vs iPhone 18 Pro · What changed, and is it worth it
Put them on a table and only the colours give the year away: the iPhone 18 Pro measures exactly what the 17 Pro did and weighs 5 g more. The changes are all inside. A 2 nm chip on a vapor chamber three times the size, a main camera that can close its aperture from f/1.48 to f/4, three more hours of video and 50 % charge in 15 minutes instead of 20, for €150 more than the 17 Pro cost at launch and a good deal more than it costs now. Prices are the official German ones.

Which one to buy
- If you own an iPhone 17 Pro
- Keep the iPhone 17 Pro
- The display, the ultra-wide, the telephoto, the front camera and the body are unchanged. Unless the 17 Pro throttles in your games or you want manual aperture control, the 18 Pro is a small step for a lot of money.
- If you are buying new at full price
- Apple iPhone 18 Pro
- €1,449 buys the 2 nm chip, the bigger vapor chamber, the variable aperture and the longer battery life over a phone Apple has stopped selling directly. For the same money new, there is no argument for the older one.
- If you shoot after dark, or want control in the stock camera app
- Apple iPhone 18 Pro
- f/1.48 gathers more light than any iPhone main camera before it, and Pro controls put aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a histogram into the Camera app. The 17 Pro's f/1.78 lens is fixed and its app has none of them.
- If you want the same phone for a lot less
- Apple iPhone 17 Pro
- Apple lists the 17 Pro as available through authorised resellers only, and they price it well below its €1,299 launch: about €1,060 in Germany at the time of writing, roughly €390 under an 18 Pro, for a phone with the same body, screen and two of its three cameras.
The thing neither spec sheet tells you
Apple quotes hours, never capacity, and the EU energy label does the opposite, so the two labels are the only place the battery change can be measured: 3,988 mAh in the 17 Pro becomes 4,056 mAh in the 18 Pro, a gain of 68 mAh or 1.7 %, for a claimed jump from 33 to 36 hours of video, or 9 %. Nearly all of the extra battery life therefore comes from the 2 nm chip's efficiency, not from a bigger cell. The other number no spec sheet states: the Pro's European entry price rose from €1,299 to €1,449, 11.5 %, while the US price rose from $1,099 to $1,199, 9 %.
The body did not change, and neither did half the hardware
Both measure 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm; the 18 Pro weighs 211 g to the 17 Pro's 206 g. The aluminium unibody, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, IP68 to 6 m, the Action button and Camera Control all carry over. So do the 6.3-inch 2622 × 1206 display at 460 ppi and 3,000 nits, the 48 MP ultra-wide, the 48 MP 4× telephoto and the 18 MP Center Stage front camera. Colours are the one external tell: Silver, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue on the 17 Pro; Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy on the 18 Pro. Everything that follows is under the shell.
The main camera gets an aperture ring
The 17 Pro's 48 MP main camera is a fixed f/1.78 lens. The 18 Pro's, on a new sensor, steps between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0 with six laser-cut blades, the first iPhone able to change its aperture at all. The wide end is the everyday gain: more light than any previous iPhone main camera, so cleaner night shots and more natural background separation without software. Stopping down to f/4 for deeper focus is a narrower tool, mainly for group shots. Around the lens, the 18 Pro adds Pro controls, Apple Reference Image (the sensor signs what it captured), Photographic Styles 3 and Cinematic effects applied after capture; the 17 Pro gets none of them.
2 nm, and a vapor chamber that finally matters
The A19 Pro is a 3 nm chip with a 6-core GPU; the A20 Pro is Apple's first 2 nm chip, with a 7-core GPU up to 40 % faster, a dual 16-core Neural Engine with double the AI throughput and 50 % more memory bandwidth. The bigger change is around the chip: the 18 Pro's vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the 17 Pro's, and the memory now sits beside the die rather than on top of it, out of the thermal path. Apple rates the result at up to 40 % better sustained performance, the highest figure it has ever claimed, and sustained performance was exactly what Apple spent most of the 17 Pro's launch defending.
Battery and charging: three hours and five minutes
Apple's claims move from 33 to 36 hours of video playback and from 30 to 33 hours streamed. Wired charging improves from 50 % in 20 minutes on a 40 W adapter to 50 % in around 15 minutes on a 60 W one; MagSafe and Qi2 stay at 25 W. The 18 Pro also gains Apple's C2 modem, quoted at faster uploads for 15 % less energy. On the EU energy label the cell grows from 3,988 to 4,056 mAh (4,252 to 4,288 mAh on eSIM-only units), so the battery gain is mostly efficiency.
Price: €150 more at launch, much more against the street
The 17 Pro launched at €1,299 in Germany and $1,099 in the US for 256 GB; the 18 Pro starts at €1,449 and $1,199. Apple no longer sells the 17 Pro directly and lists it through authorised resellers, where it sits around €1,060 in Germany at the time of writing, roughly €390 under an 18 Pro. The 18 Pro also adds a 2 TB tier at €2,949, and its storage ladder is steep: €500 from 512 GB to 1 TB. Both phones are eSIM-only in the US; in Europe the 17 Pro kept a nano-SIM tray beside its eSIM, while the 18 Pro is eSIM-only everywhere.
The Dynamic Island, and the front of the phone
The only visible change is the Dynamic Island: part of the Face ID array moved under the display, so the cutout is narrower and holds three Live Activities side by side where two fit before. Face ID itself, the Center Stage front camera and the display's ProMotion 1–120 Hz refresh are unchanged, and both phones run iOS 27 with Apple Intelligence.
