Apple iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max · The camera finally gets an aperture ring

• A real variable aperture on the 48 MP main camera – six laser-cut blades driven by a new rotor step between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, the first time an iPhone has been able to change its aperture at all
• Pro controls in the stock Camera app: manual aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a live histogram, with an API so third-party apps can drive the aperture too
• Apple Reference Image – the new main sensor signs every pixel it captures, and Private Cloud Compute turns that into an unalterable reference shot you can hold next to the edited one

Apple redesigned the Pro iPhone last year, and this year it did not touch the outline: the 18 Pro is the same 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm as the 17 Pro, to the tenth of a millimetre. Put the two on a table and only the new burgundy finish gives the year away.

That restraint is partly deliberate and partly strategic – the iPhone Duo is the phone Apple wants people talking about, and a showy Pro would have competed with it. But reading this as a filler year would be a mistake. Behind an unchanged shell sit the first 2 nm chip in an iPhone, the biggest thermal redesign the line has had, the largest battery gain Apple has ever claimed, and the first iPhone camera that can physically change its aperture. That is a lot of substance for a phone that looks like a colour refresh.

The honest framing is that Apple spent this year fixing the things a Pro buyer actually notices on day four hundred – heat, battery, and how much control the camera gives you – instead of the things they notice in the shop.

Apple's own figures make this an unusually measurable generation.

• Chip: A19 Pro → A20 Pro, now built on a 2 nm process. The 7-core GPU is up to 40 % faster, the dual 16-core Neural Engine doubles AI throughput, and memory bandwidth rises 50 %.
• Cooling: the vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the 17 Pro's, and the chip package now sits the silicon die beside the memory so the memory is out of the thermal path. Apple claims up to a 40 % gain in sustained performance.
• Main camera: a fixed aperture becomes a variable one (f/1.48–f/4.0), on a new sensor with a new computational pipeline. This is the headline change and there is no equivalent on the 17 Pro.
• Camera software: Pro controls, Apple Reference Image, Photographic Styles 3 (up from 2), smart focus tracking and after-the-fact Cinematic effects are all new. The 17 Pro gets none of them.
• Battery: 33 → 36 hours of video on the Pro, and 39 → 45 hours on the Pro Max – the biggest single-generation jump Apple has claimed. On the EU energy label the cell goes to 4,056 mAh (from the 17 Pro's 3,988) and to 5,391 mAh on the Max (from 4,823, an 11.8 % gain).
• Charging: 50 % in 20 minutes on a 40 W adapter becomes 50 % in around 15 minutes on a 60 W one.
• Dynamic Island: shrinks, because part of Face ID moved under the display, and now holds three Live Activities instead of two.
• Modem: C1X → C2, with faster uploads at 15 % less energy.
• Weight: 206 g → 211 g. Dimensions are otherwise identical.

And what did not change, which matters just as much: the 18 MP Center Stage front camera is the same, the ultra-wide and the 4× telephoto are carried over unaltered, the displays are the same sizes at the same 3000-nit peak, IP68 is unchanged, and the body is still the aluminium unibody introduced last year. If you own a 17 Pro and do not care about aperture control, this is a sustained-performance and battery upgrade – a real one, but a narrow one.

The rear system is three 48 MP sensors. The 48 MP Fusion Main at 24 mm is the new one: six laser-cut blades on a new rotor mechanism move it between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, with second-generation sensor-shift stabilisation and 100 % Focus Pixels behind it. A 12 MP optical-quality 2× crop at 48 mm comes off the same sensor. The 48 MP Fusion Ultra Wide at 13 mm and f/2.2 covers 120° and handles macro, and the 48 MP Fusion Telephoto is a 100 mm f/2.8 tetraprism with 3D sensor-shift stabilisation and autofocus, yielding 4× optical, an 8× optical-quality 200 mm crop and a 16× optical-quality range end to end, with digital zoom to 40×.

Variable aperture is the sort of feature that sounds larger than it is, and it is worth being precise about why it helps. The genuine everyday win is the wide end: f/1.48 lets in more light than any previous iPhone main camera, which means cleaner night shots and more natural background separation without leaning on software. Stopping down to f/4 does the opposite – less light, more depth of field – so it earns its keep in a narrower set of situations, mainly group shots where you want the back row sharp. Anyone expecting the narrow settings to transform everyday photography will be underwhelmed; the wide end is the upgrade.

What is unambiguously good is the control. Pro controls put manual aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a live histogram into the stock Camera app – the sort of thing that has meant a third-party app until now – and there is an API so other apps can drive the aperture too. Photographic Styles 3 adds texture and grain.

Apple Reference Image is the quietly significant one. The new main sensor signs the data it captures, and Private Cloud Compute develops that into an unalterable reference image you can view in Photos beside the edited version, like a digital negative. With upcoming SynthID support for spotting AI-generated material, it is a serious answer to a problem the whole industry has been hand-waving at, and it matters most to exactly the photojournalists Apple named.

Video remains the deepest toolkit on any phone: 4K120 in Dolby Vision, ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, Genlock, ProRes to 4K120 with external recording, and Cinematic effects now applicable after capture at up to 60 fps. The 18 MP Center Stage front camera carries over from last year unchanged.

The A20 Pro is the first 2 nm chip in an iPhone. Its 6-core CPU pairs two performance cores with four efficiency cores and adds Neural Accelerators; the 7-core GPU is up to 40 % faster than the A19 Pro's with hardware ray tracing; and the new dual 16-core Neural Engine – 32 cores in total – doubles on-device AI throughput. Memory bandwidth is up 50 %.

The more interesting engineering is around the chip rather than in it. A new package borrowed from Apple's M-series desktop silicon puts the die side by side with the memory, taking the memory out of the chip's thermal path so the processor can bond directly to the vapor chamber. That chamber now has three times the surface area of the one in the iPhone 17 Pro, and Apple rates the result at up to a 40 % gain in sustained performance – the highest it has ever claimed.

Sustained is the word that matters. Peak benchmark numbers have not been the Pro iPhone's problem for years; holding them through a long gaming session has been, and it was the thing Apple spent most of last year's launch defending. Early hands-on accounts of retail hardware describe demanding console-class titles holding a locked 120 fps rather than sagging after a few minutes, which is what this whole redesign was for.

As on every iPhone, Apple publishes no RAM figure, so there is none to quote.

New battery designs plus the efficiency of a 2 nm chip give the 18 Pro up to 36 hours of video playback and 24 hours of typical use, and the 18 Pro Max up to 45 hours of video and 30 hours of typical use. The Max figure is six hours more than its predecessor managed and is, by Apple's own account, the largest increase in battery life it has ever shipped on an iPhone. On the Max, five minutes on a cable is quoted as roughly seven hours of video.

Charging improves too: 50 % in around 15 minutes with a 60 W adapter using Adjustable Voltage Supply, down from 20 minutes on a 40 W one, or 50 % in 30 minutes on MagSafe or Qi2 at up to 25 W.

Apple's marketing quotes hours and percentages, never a capacity. In Europe it has to publish one for the energy label, though, so its EU pages carry the figures: 4,056 mAh in the 18 Pro and 5,391 mAh in the 18 Pro Max. The tray-less units are slightly larger at 4,288 and 5,567 mAh per China's 3C filings, the SIM tray's volume going to the cell. Peak wattage Apple still does not publish, so charging speed remains hard to compare against the Chinese flagships, which generally charge faster. What can be said is that a phone claiming 45 hours of video is not one you will think about at dinnertime.

Both models are eSIM-only worldwide, with dual eSIM and no physical tray.

The aluminium unibody carries over, with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back, and IP68 rated to 6 m for 30 minutes. Four finishes: black, silver, glacier and burgundy, the last of them new and the only one anybody will notice across a table.

The Action button and Camera Control both stay. Face ID stays too, and gains from the shrunken Dynamic Island rather than losing anything to it.

Pro or Pro Max comes down to two numbers and nothing else. The 18 Pro is 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm and 211 g with a 6.3-inch screen; the 18 Pro Max is 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm and 249 g with a 6.9-inch one. Chip, cameras, materials, finishes and storage tiers are identical. The only meaningful split beyond size is battery – 36 hours of video against 45 – and this year that gap is the widest it has been, which makes the Max a genuinely different proposition rather than just a bigger one. At 249 g it is also a heavy phone by any measure – and this is where the comparison with the Chinese flagships stings. The OPPO Find X9 Ultra carries 7,050 mAh at 235 g, and the Huawei Pura X View 7,000 mAh at 201 g – 1,600 mAh more than the Max in a body 48 g lighter. Apple is plainly spending those grams elsewhere.

One more thing did change, and it is the only visible one: the Dynamic Island. Moving part of the Face ID stack beneath the display made the cutout meaningfully narrower, and Apple used the space rather than pocketing it – three Live Activities now fit side by side where two did before. It is the rare shrink that gives you something back.

Both ship with iOS 27, Apple Intelligence and the rebuilt Siri AI, which arrives as a beta on 14 September. Siri draws on personal context across messages, mail and photos, understands what is on screen, and gets its own app with history synced privately through iCloud. A Siri mode inside the Camera app can answer questions about what the lens is pointed at.

The beta label deserves attention rather than a footnote. Apple has spent two years promising a rebuilt Siri and is shipping this one unfinished on its most expensive non-folding phone, in English first with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following in October. Judge it when it ships finished.

Apple publishes no numbered update commitment for iPhones, so there is no figure to hold it to – though its record on supporting old hardware remains the best in the industry, and on a phone at this price that track record is worth real money at resale.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the US and €1,449 in Germany for 256 GB, rising to €1,699 (512 GB), €2,199 (1 TB) and €2,949 (2 TB). The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 and €1,599, then €1,849, €2,349 and €3,099. France is dearer – €1,479 and €1,629 to start – and the UK prices are £1,199 and £1,299.

Pre-orders open on Saturday 12 September at 5 a.m. PT in more than 65 countries including Germany, France and the UK, with phones in hands on Friday 18 September. Twenty more countries follow on 25 September. Apple no longer sells the iPhone 17 Pro directly; it lists it as available through authorised resellers, so the outgoing model is a street-price hunt rather than a store option.

One number is worth flagging before you configure. The storage ladder is steeper than it looks: on Apple's own German pricing the step from 512 GB to 1 TB costs €500, and 1 TB to 2 TB another €750. Buy the storage you need rather than the storage you might, because the top of that ladder puts a bar phone within sight of foldable money.
