Samsung shipped its first Fold in 2019. Huawei, HONOR, OPPO, vivo, Motorola, Xiaomi and Google all followed. Apple watched for seven years, and the wait had started to look like a verdict on the whole category. It was not. The iPhone Duo is here, it is the most reworked iPhone since the original, and Apple deserves the credit for arriving with a clear opinion rather than a copy.

That opinion is the shape. The obvious move would have been the Galaxy Z Fold formula: a tall, narrow cover screen that opens into an almost square tablet. Apple did the opposite. Closed, the Duo is 117.8 mm tall and 84.1 mm wide – short and broad, roughly the footprint of a passport. Open, the width doubles to 164.6 mm while the height stays put, so the inner screen unfolds into a wide panel in a 1.4:1 ratio.

If that sounds familiar, it should. It is the geometry Huawei's Pura X Max introduced and both Samsung and Xiaomi have since adopted – the Galaxy Z Fold8 opens the same way – and its advantage is concrete: a wide screen plays video and games at close to their native shape instead of stranding them between thick black bars, and it is far easier to hold in two hands. Apple is not first to the idea. It is the first to put it on sale in the West at this scale, which is a different kind of significant.

The other headline is not on the spec sheet at all. Apple has managed a foldable with a full IP68 rating, sealed against dust as well as water, on its first attempt. It is not the first to do it: Honor has shipped the Magic V6 at IP68 and IP69 since March, and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold has been IP68 since August. The one still behind is Samsung, whose Z Fold8 and Z Flip8 both ship at IP48, water-resistant but not dust-tight – dust in the hinge being exactly what sank the original Galaxy Fold in 2019.

The Duo has no predecessor, so the useful comparison is the fold it will be cross-shopped against. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 went global in August and reaches for the same wide shape, which makes the deltas unusually clean.

• Inner display: both are 7.6 inches. Samsung's is 1848 × 2448 at 403 ppi; Apple's is 1878 × 2670 at 430 ppi, and adds a nano-texture matte layer Samsung does not offer.
• Cover display: 5.4 inches at 460 ppi on the Duo, 5.5 inches at 428 ppi on the Fold8. Effectively a draw, with Apple sharper.
• Weight and thickness: this is Samsung's win, and it is not close. The Fold8 is 201 g and folds to 9.7 mm; the Duo is 254 g and 11.3 mm. That is 53 g – the difference between a fold that disappears in a pocket and one you keep noticing.
• Ingress protection: IP68 to 6 m for the Duo against IP48 for the Fold8. Apple's win, and the more meaningful one when the average phone is now kept about three and a half years.
• Cameras: both settle for two rear lenses and a 2× optical-quality crop rather than a real telephoto. Samsung pairs 50 MP with 50 MP, Apple 48 MP with 48 MP. Neither is a camera flagship.
• Charging: 45 W wired on the Fold8; Apple quotes 50 % in around 20 minutes with a 60 W adapter and does not publish a peak figure.
• Price: €1,999 against €2,299 at 256 GB. Apple is asking €300 more.

The short version: Samsung sells the better-engineered body, Apple the better-sealed one, and the €300 buys iOS and the ecosystem rather than a hardware advantage.

The inner display is a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR OLED at 1878 × 2670 and 430 ppi. The outer is 5.4 inches at 1398 × 2034 and 460 ppi. Both run ProMotion with an adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, both support Always On, and both peak at 3000 nits outdoors – 1600 nits on HDR content, with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

The design decision that matters is that the two panels share an aspect ratio. On most foldables the cover screen is tall and narrow while the inner one is nearly square, so every app has to re-flow when you open the phone. Here, content simply scales up, which removes the single most jarring thing about using a fold.

The inner panel's nano-texture finish is the other unusual choice. It is a matte layer, so it cuts reflections – and because a matte surface scatters light rather than mirroring it, the crease is much harder to catch at an angle. On both counts the effect appears to be real rather than marketing: first accounts of finished hardware call it the least reflective screen they have met on a phone, and describe a crease you feel under a fingertip before you see it. Apple does not claim the crease is gone, and no one should expect it to be. It is not alone up there, though: OPPO has been selling the Find N6 since March on a hinge it calls Zero-Feel Crease, under Auto-Smoothing Flex Glass, and reviewers call it the no-crease fold. The Duo is at the front of that field rather than alone in it.

The catch is that the treatment stops at the hinge. The outer display appears to go without the same anti-reflective layer, so the screen you actually use in the street is the more mirror-like of the two – an odd way round for a phone whose cover panel is meant to carry most of the day.

Beneath the inner display sits a FaceTime camera that stays out of sight when it is not in use, leaving the screen uninterrupted. Temper expectations there: hiding a lens under a working panel costs it light, the patch above it reads as a different texture the moment it wakes, and first impressions of the results put it well below everything else on this phone. Support for the USB-C Apple Pencil on either display is promised later this year, which is the first time an iPhone has taken a stylus at all.

The frame is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, and the hinge cover is 3D-printed from titanium and given a contrasting micro-blasted texture. Apple says the hinge alone is built from more than 100 components, tuned to hold the inner display flat when open and to snap shut against an integrated magnet array. Internally there are support ribs for stiffness and antenna splits with ceramic fibre inserts.

The screen stack is where the engineering argument sits. High-strength glass runs above and below the folding panel, bonded with adhesives designed to let the layers slide past each other like the pages of a book so the bend does not load one surface, and a titanium plate underneath adds rigidity. On top sits a nano-textured cover layer made from a custom polymer Apple rates at up to 40 % higher stiffness than the industry norm. Ceramic Shield protects the back; Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display is claimed to be three times more scratch-resistant than the previous generation.

It is genuinely well made, and it is also heavy. At 254 g the Duo outweighs every book-style foldable we cover – the Galaxy Z Fold8 by 53 g – and at 11.3 mm closed it is over a millimetre thicker. Apple's "thinnest iPhone ever" line refers to the 5.2 mm open state and only holds inside the iPhone range; measured against the folds it competes with, this is one of the chunkier ones. First-generation hardware usually is.

One note on the shape that no spec sheet will tell you: the camera module is a pill in the top-left corner of the back rather than a centred island.

The passport comparison also cuts both ways. A cover screen that broad is comfortable to read but not comfortable to reach across, and early accounts of the retail shape describe the far corners and the pull-down gestures as a genuine stretch one-handed – the price every wide fold pays for its proportions. The volume keys sitting on the top edge rather than the side does not help.

Touch ID returns, built into the side button so it works identically whether the phone is open or shut. On a device with two usable screens that is the pragmatic answer, though it is still a step down from Face ID: every unlock now asks for a finger in the right place. Two colours: Star White and Night Sky.

The rear system is a 48 MP Fusion Main at f/1.6 and 26 mm with sensor-shift stabilisation, alongside a 48 MP Fusion Ultra Wide at f/2.2, 13 mm and 120° that also handles macro. Between them sits a 12 MP 2× optical-quality crop at 52 mm taken from the main sensor, giving a 4× optical-quality range end to end and up to 10× digital. There is no dedicated telephoto lens, which is the same compromise the Galaxy Z Fold8 makes and the same one that keeps both out of the camera-flagship conversation.

Within those limits the hardware is strong: a large sensor, a fast aperture, zero shutter lag and a new computational pipeline, with 24 MP as the default output and 48 MP available. Video runs to 4K120 in Dolby Vision on the main camera, Cinematic effects can now be applied after capture at up to 60 fps, and time-lapse gains 4K Dolby Vision HDR.

The interesting part is what the shape unlocks. Duo Preview puts a live preview on the outer display so your subject can see their own framing while you shoot them on the far better rear cameras – including your own selfies. Smart Take watches the scene on-device and fires when people are actually posing rather than when a timer expires. Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on the cover screen to get a child to look at the lens. Duo FaceTime lets someone standing next to you join a call on the outer screen. Rear-camera selfies previewed on the cover screen are nothing new – foldables have done that for years, Honor included. What is new is the layer on top: Smart Take and Kid Cue are not about what the hinge can do, they are about why the shot comes out wrong anyway.

The Duo runs the A20 Pro, the same 2 nm chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, in a new package inspired by Apple's M-series desktop silicon that bonds the processor directly to a custom vapor chamber. The 6-core CPU pairs two performance cores with four efficiency cores and is up to 20 % faster than the A19 Pro; Apple calls it the fastest CPU in a smartphone. The 7-core GPU is up to 40 % faster with hardware ray tracing, the new dual 16-core Neural Engine doubles on-device AI compute, and memory bandwidth is up 50 %.

The number worth watching is not the peak but the floor: Apple quotes up to 35 % better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. Thin folding phones throttle, because there is nowhere for heat to go once the body is split in half; a vapor chamber bonded to the chip is the correct answer, and it is the reason a foldable this thin can hold a frame rate at all. A new display engine drives both panels at once so the handover as you open the phone stays fluid.

Apple does not publish a RAM figure for any iPhone, so there is none to quote here.

There is one high-energy battery in each half, which is how Apple avoided losing capacity to the hinge, and energy-rebalancing algorithms let the pair behave as a single cell. The quoted figures are up to 24 hours of typical use with both screens shared evenly, up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, and up to 44 hours on the cover screen – the last of which is simply what happens when a small, efficient panel does the work. Apple does not publish a mAh figure, as with every iPhone. Reuters puts the two cells together at 5,400 mAh and the other estimates sit in a 5,000–5,500 mAh band, so treat the exact number as an estimate rather than a spec-sheet line.

Charging is 50 % in around 20 minutes with a 60 W-capable adapter, or 50 % in around 30 minutes wirelessly on a MagSafe or Qi2 charger at up to 25 W. That is competent rather than quick: several Chinese foldables refill considerably faster, and Apple continues to quote percentages instead of a peak wattage, and no capacity in mAh at all. For a €2,299 phone, the reticence is starting to look like a habit rather than a policy.

The eSIM-only design is part of the same calculation – dropping the physical SIM tray frees internal volume for cells. Buyers in markets where local carriers are slow with eSIM should check before ordering, because there is no tray to fall back on.

iOS 27 has been rebuilt around the hardware rather than stretched to fit it. Lock Screen controls, the Home Screen dock and app navigation move to the side to preserve vertical space; the Dynamic Island is redesigned to sit vertically along the edge of either screen; and opening the phone reveals two Home Screen pages with a scrolling Today View of widgets on the left. Content reacts as the phone folds, reorients when you turn it, and moves to whichever display is facing you.

Split View is the headline: two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time, including two windows of the same app, with app pairs you can save and return to. StandBy now triggers on either screen even off charge, turning the closed phone into a photo frame or widget panel.

Apple Intelligence and the rebuilt Siri AI ship alongside, the latter in beta from 14 September, with personal context across messages, mail and photos, on-screen awareness, and a dedicated Siri app whose history syncs privately through iCloud. On a device where you can hold a conversation with Siri on one half of the screen while reading the other, the pairing makes more sense than it does on a slab. Netflix, Zoom and Slack are already adapted, which matters more than it sounds – the reason Android foldables took years to feel finished was app support, not hardware.

The phone ships with iOS 27.1. Apple publishes no numbered update commitment for iPhones, so there is no figure to hold it to; its record on long support is nonetheless the best in the industry.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States and €2,299 in Germany for 256 GB, rising to €2,549 for 512 GB, €3,049 for 1 TB and €3,799 for 2 TB. France lists it slightly higher at €2,339, and the UK price is £1,999. There is no RAM choice to make – storage is the only variable.

Pre-orders open on Friday 16 October at 5 a.m. PT in more than 70 countries and regions, Germany, France and the UK among them, with phones in hands on Friday 23 October. A further 28 countries follow on 30 October.

At €2,299 the Duo lands €300 above the Galaxy Z Fold8 and roughly €1,100 above the iPhone 18 Pro it shares a chip with. That is first-generation pricing on first-generation hardware, and it is the one number here that no amount of engineering justifies on its own.
